On Thursday, July 13th, Brooklyn-based photographer Jasiah Powers debuted his first short film in partnership with Cole Edwards and Kinetics NTWK. The short docu-film centered on the next generation of talent on the rise in New York City. Despite the hardships that come with creating in the city that never sleeps, the creatives highlighted in this project continue to beat the odds and grow from concrete. In an Instagram post about the film, Powers said, “it's easy to believe artistic growth is exclusive to the financially and socially privileged, but there's a rising renaissance existing not only in Brooklyn but in New York as a whole. Seen from the perspectives of 6 different creatives of color based in NYC, this short film shows how possible it is to be a creative pillar despite our surroundings. Black kids deserve to be artistically vulnerable, and it's time the world sees its possible.”
The film stars Robert Provilus, a painter from Canarsie, Brooklyn, NY; Zion AKA Slim Jimz, a stylist and model from Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY; Kelz, a musician from East New York, Brooklyn, NY, Ice Cole, an event curator and model from Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY; Doctor Garmentz, a designer and content creator from Canarsie, Brooklyn, NY; and Amaya Santiago, a model, musician, and designer from Bronx, NY. Supporters gathered to view a screening and photo showcase hosted by Jasiah & Cole in Brooklyn, NY on July 13th.
