Major Sports Moments to Look for in 2025

As 2024 reached its climax in the sports world, 2025 roared onto the scene with a year packed with intense moments. The Kansas City Chiefs have a chance to make NFL history in the Super Bowl, the FIFA Club World Cup Final will be held in the United States for the first time ever, and the NHL will premier a brand new international tournament that will showcase the best talent that hockey has to offer. These events are just a glimpse of what 2025 has to offer. With a fiery lineup on the horizon, here is a roadmap of every major sports event for the next 11 months.

Winter

The winter months are typically dominated by football. The only thing distracting us from frigid temps is the heated competition on the field as the NFL playoffs are carried out through January and February. This action will culminate in Super Bowl LIX, headlined by Kendrick Lamar on Feb. 9. This year will determine whether the Chiefs could hold the crown as the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls.

Along with the Super Bowl, the NHL will hold the first 4 Nations Face-Off event, which will be a combination of teams representing the United States, Canada, Finland and Sweden competing  in a tournament-style matchup that will last from Feb. 12-20. This tournament will take the place of the NHL All-Star Game and will be held in Boston, MA as well as Montreal, Quebec.

As March rolls in, the annual College Basketball tournament begins. March Madness will start on March 16 and stretch until the National Championship game on April 7. With this draft being one of the most anticipated in recent years for both the men’s and women’s game, March Madness will be a preview for what’s to come as players like Cooper Flagg of Duke and Paige Bueckers of UCONN are drafted into their respective leagues.

March also holds the beginning of the MLB season on the 27th, which will run until October.

Spring

Starting off the season, the golf Masters will take place between April 7-13 in Augusta, GA. The Masters will feature some veteran names like Tiger Woods as well as Scottie Scheffler, who currently holds the top spot in the world. Towards the end of April, WWE Wrestlemania will take place alongside the NBA playoffs, with both starting on the 19th.

May and June are marked by the intense NBA and NHL playoffs which will run until the final days of June. After one of the most intense finals series just one year ago, the NHL will hope to replicate that atmosphere in this year’s Stanley Cup.

May also holds the PGA Championship in golf from May 15-18, as well as the beginning of the WNBA season on the 16th. The Women's Champions League Final will take place on the 24th, and the month will end with the Men's Champions League Final on the 31st.

Along with the playoffs in two major sports, June is jam-packed with prestigious tennis tournaments. The French Open will be held from May 19 through June 8. Wimbledon will close out the month, starting on the 30th and finishing on July 13.

Summer

As Wimbledon continues into the middle of July, the FIFA Club World Cup Final will be held on July 13 in New Brunswick, NJ. The Tour de France will also be held from July 5-27. July will also have The Open Championship in golf from the 17th-20th.

The WNBA All-Star Game will be held on July 19 in Indianapolis, the home of Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever

The month will end on the Women's Euro Final on July 27.

August is one of the lightest months of sports, harboring the US Open from Aug. 25-Sept. 6.

Fall

The fall is largely a time for reset in the sports world. Many of the major sports will start their season during the fall months, while others will come to an end. The NFL will begin their 2025-26 campaign on Sept. 4, followed by the Ryder Cup that will take place from Sept. 25-28.

October is a big month for basketball, with the WNBA finals starting in the early days of the month, and finishing on Oct. 17. The NBA’s opening day will be in the last half of October, and the MLB World Series will also take place within this time period.

November and December have two legendary sports dates that coincide with the holidays during these months. Thanksgiving is usually accompanied by the best games that the NFL can provide, with Christmas being the same for the NBA. Given the streaming success of the 2024 NFL Christmas Day game, it’s likely the league will aim for a repeat with another star studded performance during halftime.

With a fresh year ahead of us, the possibilities for exciting wins and heartbreaking losses are endless.
